What we'll do

Introduction to Artistic Gaze is a small-group live workshop exploring some of the building blocks of a more personal photographic way of seeing. Through three guided exercises, we'll work with ordinary surroundings and explore how attention, framing, composition and repeated choices can shape what becomes a photograph.

Rather than searching for interesting subjects, we'll practise moving from recognising what is in front of us to noticing how it appears — through shape, edge, distance, light and relation.

You'll make a small sequence of photographs as we work. We'll also look back at the resulting images without rushing to explain or judge them, noticing recurring choices, attractions and visual relationships.

Three ways
into looking

Each exercise has a different focus. You'll receive the full prompts during the workshop, with time to photograph between our conversations.

Exercise 01

Interrupt automatic naming

Move from naming what you're looking at to noticing how it appears. Work with fragments, edges, shape and light before deciding what the image is about.

Exercise 02

Change one visual variable

Stay with one subject and change one thing at a time — distance, angle, framing or light. Notice how one deliberate choice can transform the photograph.

Exercise 03

Follow what pulls you

Let attraction lead without needing to explain it. Look back at the resulting sequence and notice what you keep returning to.

What you may
leave with

You'll leave with a small group of photographs, but the more important outcome may be a clearer sense of some of the ways you tend to see: what catches your attention, how you frame instinctively, and which visual choices you return to without necessarily knowing why.

The workshop is not about finding a style in one session. It is an introduction to ways of noticing, choosing, making and looking again that can support a photographic practice over time.

Who it's for

01

For artists, creatives and anyone curious about making more personal photographic images.

02

You don't need photography experience or specialist equipment. Your phone camera is enough.

03

The group is limited to 5–8 participants so there is time to make photographs, look at what emerges and talk together.

About Tatiana

I'm Tatiana Johnson, a contemporary artist based in Bern. Photography has been central to my practice for many years and formed the foundation of the portfolio with which I entered the MFA programme at Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK), where I graduated in 2025.

Introduction to Artistic Gaze grew out of my own photographic practice: learning to move away from searching for the “right” subject, paying closer attention to framing, spatial relationships and light, and then looking again at the resulting images before rushing to explain or judge them.
